Markham has read the volume The Preistarian Gospel of Galilee that Herbert gave him and he enjoyed it greatly. Markham is writing a volume slong the same lines called The Forgotten Purpose of Jesus. Discusses justice as the ultimate basis of any true social order.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
